Equal Opportunities

Imogen Sutton

Hi! I’m Imogen, your Equal Opportunities Rep for this year. I’m here to make sure that all members of the JCR are treated without discrimination and receive all the support they are entitled to, as well as organising and publicising equal opportunities initiatives. If you have any questions, suggestions or concerns about equality issues, or feel that you may require additional support or special arrangements for examinations, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I also work closely with the rest of the welfare team, so if there is anything else you would like to talk over, you can be assured that anything you say will be treated with the strictest confidence, and are always more than welcome to pop in for a chat!

Merton’s Equality Policy (printed in the College Handbook) makes it very clear that discrimination of any kind is not tolerated, and the Bursar and Senior Tutor have official responsibility for implementing this policy with regards to domestic and academic issues respectively. The college has also designated Drs Kate Blackmore and Steven Gunn as specially trained harassment advisers, and if at any point you believe you are a victim of harassment, or would simply like some advice, it is strongly recommended that you contact one or both of these before considering lodging a formal complaint. They can be contacted directly or indirectly through me or any other member of the welfare team.

If at any point you do have any general or specific concerns about equality issues, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me as a first port of call. I’m also the person to come to if, for whatever reason, you feel that you may require additional support (e.g. for disabilities, health problems or specific religious requirements), or are entitled to special exam arrangements. These can be arranged confidentially, mainly through Vicky Lill, the Academic Administrator, and are tailored to individual circumstances. You may also like a copy of the OUSU Guide for Students with Disabilities – there should be some available in the laundry room, and if you drop me an email I can always pidge one to you discreetly.

In addition to this, if you would like to get more involved in equal opportunities at college or university level, or have any bright ideas, do let me know!
