Some of you may already be out as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. Some of you may be uncertain. Some of you may not have told anyone. Whatever the case, you will not find a more friendly and accepting place than Merton. Mertonians don't simply tolerate - they genuinely don't care (and we mean that in the nicest way!) whether you're gay, straight or something in between. Nor will you feel any pressure to fit into any stereotype: you can just be yourself.
The LGBT people in college are represented by a male and female student reps who organise exciting events like film nights that are open to all college members. They are traditionally a wonderful opportunity for devouring much food. The LGBT reps are peer support trained: you can talk to them about your secuality, coming out, or any concern or worry that you may have... or you could just go see them because you want a chat.
The LGBT reps at Merton act as a contact point between the college and LGBT events outside the university. The University's LGB Society - LGB Soc - provides a central point for socialising for many, but not all of the LGBT community in Oxford. Weekly drinks, a club-night, and cafi visits intermingled with Balls, film nights, and formal halls make it one of the most social of societies and many find it a real strength of Oxford's LGBT support.
Merton is a really wonderful place to be - for everyone - and the whole welfare team is on hand should you ever need someone to talk to.
- For more information on the University's LGB Soc check out their website.
Remember to sign up for an LGB Soc parent within your first week if you are just about to start at Merton - you can do this online at the above site! - If you have more questions about LGBT life at Merton why not ask the LGBT reps via email.
